Mateo and counting! Mateo and numbers!

Mateo knows how to count until 10… maybe a little more, both in English and French.
But does he really know what it means?
Ha, ha I was reading an article about kids 33 months and counting! I couldn’t believe it. They were saying that children at his age knows what mean 1,2 and 3 but no more.. After that they were saying that they only repeat by memory. Andrew didn’t believe it either. So we experimented!
We showed him four pears and asked him how many pears there are on the table!
First of all, he can’t answer the question without counting loudly each one.
Secondly we heard: “one, two, three, four, five!” Oh oh!
We said no Mateo there are not five pears try again.
“One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight!”
We looked at each other and said, “ok this article is right he doesn’t know!”
We tried with only two pears and he was able to say two pears, same thing with 3 pears! So he knows the meaning of numbers until 3!
Very interesting article!!!
And we can say our boy is not a genius and he is a normal boy on track!!
So mom, dad if you have a kid under 3, experiment! And let us know how he or she did!!
In the article, it says that the best way to set your child up for later math skills is not to coach him in counting and adding but to weave numerical references into his day. Count steps when you walk or blocks as you play. Provide puzzles whose pieces are in different shapes (circle, square, triangle); identifying these shapes is another kind of pre-reading.
